A recent CareerBuilder survey revealed that 70 per cent of employers use social media when screening candidates. This is no longer a surprise but did you know 43 per cent of employers continues to monitor employees social media profiles after being hired!   1. Create public social media accounts – At the very minimum, you’ll need a LinkedIn account. Consider having a public Twitter or Instagram account as well. Both of those create opportunities to show your expertise in your industry. If you’re a writer or professional, a Twitter account can be used to show that you’re up on the latest trends. If you’re in a creative field, you can use Instagram to show your latest designs and artwork.
  2. Don’t be afraid to post – Keep your accounts updated with fresh and relevant content that is professional. LinkedIn accounts should have your latest job info and post on updates of success at your latest job. Twitter and Instagram can be used as online portfolios and provide good insight on your interests outside of work.
  3. Be Engaged – There’s nothing wrong with following companies of interest or industry leaders that you admire. It’s a good way to network and increase visibility. Try posting comments on posts when relevant. A quick tip would be to avoid directly messaging people that you are not familiar with or not prompted by.
